Q&A with C.J. Kyle
What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?
What if someone you loved was in jail for a crime he didn’t commit and you knew who the real killer was but no one would listen? That was the question that sparked Silent Night, and as I followed the heroine to a small town in Tennessee to track her suspected killer, I knew I had to keep writing until I found out whether she was right.
What was your favorite part of writing this book?
Getting into the head of a killer. What makes them tick? Why do they do what they do? It’s a dark place to go, but an extremely interesting place to be.
What is your favorite line from your book?
I’m not sure there’s a favorite line for this story, but there’s a brief bit when Miranda comes face to face with the man she thinks is a killer that I always liked. For me, it depicts the exact way I’d feel in her situation and retains some of the snarky humor that always plagues me when things get serious:
She was pretty sure she’d just melt into one of the cracks in the wooden steps, one big boneless pool of terror.
She looked at the cracks. Might not be such a bad getaway. . . .
What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?
Oh this is a really tough question! It’s not so scientifically heavy as a CSI or as procedural as say, Law & Order. The town has a bit of a Northern Exposure feel in some ways, I suppose, but really I can’t think of a movie or television show that fits perfectly. Maybe more of a “What would happen to the Hart of Dixie cast if murder came to town and it was really, really cold?”
If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?
Silent Night: Don’t eat the red snow. Is that too silly? How about, Silent Night: Except for the screams. Wow. I am not quitting my day job to be a tag-line creator!
Thanks so much for having me, Angelia! That was hard, but fun!
Christmas, Tennessee, is a town where no one locks their doors and the worst crime is a stolen bicycle. Until the night blood is found…but there’s no body.
Police Chief Tucker Ambrose hopes it’s just a prank, but his years as a cop in Chicago tell him different. Then a body is discovered in the middle of the woods, staged with a bible, a crucifix, and a rosary… and Tucker knows something dark and sinister has arrived in his town.
Miranda Harley knows exactly what’s going on. In fact, she’s been tracking this serial killer, hoping to gather enough evidence to convict him. Trouble is, no one will believe her, not even the sexy police chief whose heated gazes promise nights of sin. But when Miranda falls into the crosshairs of a psychopath, Tucker must put aside his doubts and race to stop the killer from striking again.
