Q&A and #Giveaway - Knowing Vera by Rachelle Ayala

Knowing Vera
Chance for Love Book Three
By: Rachelle Ayala

Interview – Rachelle Ayala, author of Knowing Vera

1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

The Golden Gate Bridge is a symbol of hope and dreams, the gateway for many Asians immigrating to the United States. It is also the site of many suicides. There is something special about exiting the world at such a scenic and photogenic location. Cruel as it sounds, my first thought was having seven-year-old Vera witness her father’s suicide while hugging her teddy bear.

2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?

Zach, Zach, and more Zach! He’s everything a girl could want from his panty-melting grin to his swimmer’s physique and roguish Aussie accent. More than that, he is every kind of wonderful combined in a hunkalicious sweetheart who puts other people first. He lost his leg in a rescue attempt, but instead of turning bitter or giving up on life, he decided to make his life more meaningful by caring for other people. He doesn’t look for sympathy or excuses, but lives his life to the fullest. He’s honest with his feelings and loves Vera even when she wasn’t very lovable. But he has self-respect and walks away when Vera shoves him one time too many. He never grovels, he’s not a doormat, and he doesn’t let people push him around. But he’s romantic. He remembers the little things Vera asked for and surprises her by giving her much more than his boomerang. Oh, and did I mention how talented he is??? Swwooonnn.

3. What is your favorite line from your book?

“As true and as blue as my eyes.” Zach grins that half-cocked panty-vaporizing smile. “When an Aussie gives you his boomerang, it’s forever. No secret.”

4. What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

This is a really hard question. What other movie or tv show combines fight scenes on the Golden Gate Bridge with love scenes on a deserted island, cockatoos, electro dancing, an amputee hero, a crazy stalker who works at a retirement community and a murderer who always wears shades?

It would probably be a Filipino teleserye. I don’t know any exact title, but they usually have family drama, children who are not the offspring of their parents, unsolved murders, kidnappings, long lost lovers, revenge across generations, heart-rending childhood, several men vying for the same woman, crazy brothers and uncles, someone getting framed, near drownings and fights in high places, hospital scenes and repressed memories. I think the only thing I’m missing here is sister drama, since Vera has no sisters. Oh, and the police never get there in time and frequently arrest the wrong person.

5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?

Knowing Vera: What she knows could blow her chance for love.

Blurb

Vera Custodio has never fallen in love, though she has strong feelings for her friend and sometimes lover, Zach Spencer. Long-forgotten memories resurface when Vera discovers Zach’s mother was the woman her father supposedly murdered many years ago.

After losing his leg, former triathlete Zach Spencer reevaluates his life—and realizes he’s falling in love with Vera. When she ends their relationship, Zach is determined to prove his love and follows her to Australia in search of the killer.

Caught between a web of family secrets and a deranged adversary, Vera and Zach must depend on each other for survival. Love blossoms, but the truth explodes everything Vera knows about herself. Will she close her heart forever or risk it all for a shot at happily-ever-after?

Knowing Vera is a suspenseful, cross-cultural romance mixing an unsolved murder, action and adventure, and hot, steamy love scenes.

Interview & #Giveaway: Visions of Fire and Ice by Teresa D' Amario

Visions of Fire and Ice (A Petiri Book) by Teresa D’ Amario

Interview with Teresa:

What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

Probably the initial spark dates back when I was 8 years old, and I inherited a necklace from my great grandmother. It was a fake egyptian medallion. It sparked an interest that has continued to this day. Enough so that in the military I even volunteered to go to Egypt, and it is always in my head.

What was your favorite part of writing this book?

Probably the belly dance scene. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I actually gave a belly dance party at the Authors After Dark Conference.

What is your favorite line from your book?

"Dance for me"

What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

The closest would probably be Stargate with a hint of The Mummy, but it also has the family magic, Like the Drake Sisters.

If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?

I'm terrible at tag lines, let me see.

Visions of Fire & Ice, Dream, and you shalt know the gods

I don't know, I'm just awful at these. LOL.

That's a pretty good tagline. You're better at them than you think.

Blurb

Trapped on a planet not their own, the Petiri spend their lives hiding the natural gifts that set them apart from the world. They live long and unfulfilled lives, unable to find their soul mates on this backward planet known as Earth. That is until the night Ramose comes face to face with Tamara, a woman whose gifts rival his own. Determined to find why this human is in possession of an ancient magical Petiri relic, he arranges a meeting.

But Tamara, embittered from past events, is wary despite lifelong dreams of Ramose and a sure
knowledge he is her soul mate. Before long the couple find themselves ensnared in a battle that has raged for millennia in Egypt's desert. Set, Egyptian God of Chaos, is determined to take his just due: the throne of Osiris.

The only way to stop him is for Ramose to put his trust in Tamara, but, first, he must gain the same from her. The ensuing sensual relationship is filled with romance, lust and love. Their relationship is tested by an unnatural evil. Will her powers over fire, combined with his ice be enough to win the day? Or will the ancient gods and goddesses of Egypt destroy more than just their love?

Author Info

Born in Atlanta, the daughter of an Army Soldier during the early stages of the Viet Nam war, I spent my childhood traveling from state to state, finally ending up overseas in Germany where I graduated high school six months early.

My writing career however began as a young Airman in the Air Force, writing monthly articles for the weekly base paper. The articles ranged from climatological data to full center fold articles on the destructive forces of hurricanes. As I increased in rank, my writing changed to more technological instruction, including such works as WSR-88D Doppler Radar Data Interpretation Guide for North Carolina Stations, and Station Operating Procedures.

But my early writing wasn’t limited only to the technological side. I’ve written multiple dog training and behavior articles for canine websites such as Sonora Canine Freestyle, and also the Ask Blackjack column, a fun training column in the voice of my labrador retriever, then a young pup.

My first book, SheWolf, won 2nd place for Best First book in RWA’s PFF&P Prism awards.

I’m married to a wonderful man named Doug, who is also retired Air Force. We live in North Carolina with our two dogs.

Author Info

I've been a fan of all kinds of dark creatures since I was a kid (even before I discovered Stephen King at the age of 10). If it crawls in the night and tugs at your covers while you're sleeping, chances are I've written about it. It's probably no surprise that I'm a big fan of old buildings, urban exploring and things that go bump in the night. Oh, and Halloween, of course -- but that should go without saying.

Growing up, I wanted to be Indiana Jones. I ended up not pursuing a degree in Archaeology (although I toyed with the idea for a while) but I did become a huge lover of travel and history. Aside from traveling to all corners of the world, I've also lived in five countries in three continents -- including three years in Siberia and two in Vietnam. I'm currently living in Thailand.

I have a soft spot for animals (which is why you can be sure that in my stories, the dog will always make it) and right now have three wonderful -- but slightly crazy -- dogs in my life. And yes, they move with me from country to country. Too bad dogs can't accumulate frequent flyer miles!

In my other life, I also write nonfiction: articles, books, and even quizzes for the Discovery Channel website. I really can't help it -- I'm a nerd at heart and love research and discovering new things. Could be the Indiana Jones in me pushing me along.

When it comes to life, I'm pretty fearless. I figure life is too short to live it too safely -- so I take risks and I try to have fun, whether that means snowshoeing in the middle of Siberia or going ghost-hunting in an abandoned asylum. And yes, I've done both.

Mafia Secret Bonus Scene

In honor of Mafia Secret being released in print I'm going to share with you an extra scene that wasn't released in the book. I originally started the book in Marco's POV, but when I changed it to Lessa's POV this part was cut. For those who've read the book, you know that Jiovanni left a letter for each family member after his death. Here is Jiovanni's letter to Marco:

Marco ~

Looks like I’m dead. A part of me hopes it was natural causes, but both of us know that men in our profession rarely die from natural causes. Hopefully, I took the bastard out, but if I didn’t, I trust you and Jio will take care of my killer.

You watch Jio’s back. He might not want your help, but he’ll need it with all the opportunist who will try to take advantage of my untimely demise.

But on to the reason for this special letter. I’ve instructed Ryan to give it to you as soon as I’ve died. I’m trusting you to carry out my final wish.

I have another daughter, Alessandra, who I’ve never acknowledged publicly. I don’t believe she even knows that I am her real father. I made the mistake of swearing on my life to her mother that I would never contact Alessandra. Well, since I’m no longer alive and bound by my promise I can do as I please. I’m tasking you with bringing her back into the family. If she is resistant, tell her it was her father’s last request that she attend his funeral and meet her family.

Remember she knows nothing of this life and you will need to keep her safe from outside and possibly inside threats.

~ Jiovanni

Author Info

Now that her children have flown from the nest, Elizabeth lives with her two new babies (AKA Maltese) and husband, Bobby, at the foot of the beautiful Catalina Mountain Range in Oro Valley, AZ.

She loves to hike the mountain trails, ride her bike on the miles of walk/bike paths, sit on her patio sipping coffee and reading or brainstorming plots and enjoying the grandeur of her breathtaking mountain views.

Elizabeth calls herself a pantser on steroids. The first book of her Illuminati series flowed like a psychic muse channeled it from her fingertips to the keyboard. She wrote 120,000 words in 45 days. "After the first couple of chapters, the characters took over. They knew what they wanted and what they were willing to do to get it."

Her love of mythology and ancient literature and history were the backbone for her series, and the Sigma Force series by James Rollins inspired the fast-paced adventures (He recently told her at a literacy fundraiser that he found that flattering, as no one had ever told him he was inspiring before!). The result was an action packed URBAN FANTASY novel series, with its basis in truth, superstitions, mythology and conspiracy theories.

A friend compared Elizabeth's series to what it would be like if Ford and Jolie stepped through the Stargate using the Da Vinci code as a compass, tried to kill each other, and ended up colliding with a love as seemingly hopeless as Romeo and Juliet. Elizabeth claims she pictured a blond "The Rock" as the hero when she was writing, but that Jolie, with lavender eyes, would fit her heroine just fine. It was difficult for her to claim a genre (pigeon hole) for this work. There is a love relationship, but it's all about the family relationships, dysfunctional and otherwise, and the timeless struggle for power. There are very strong female leads in this story, and the men are macho enough to hold their own.

#Giveaway & Interview: The Shadow of Mudflap by Christi Snow & M.F. Smith

The Shadow of Mudflap (A Foxtrot Team Novel) by Christi Snow & M.F. Smith.
All the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Lubbock Red Cross.

Please welcome Christi Snow to my blog for a quick Q&A...

1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?
This started out as a project between MF and me. MF is a radio dj in Lubbock, TX. The plan was to write a book for charity....a romance novel. MF came up with the core group of characters...twelve of them with their names, careers, and ages. I developed the romantic suspense story line from there. Because MF is a radio personality, we knew that a lot of the readers of the book would be his local listeners in Lubbock, TX, and Lubbock just happens to be home to a major university, Texas Tech. If you know anything about West Texas, you know football is king out here...and the story flowed from there.

2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?
DEFINITELY working with MF. I've never written with anyone else's input before, but it was amazing. He's not a writer, but he is creative. Every night he would read what I wrote for the day and give feedback and input into where the story was at and where it was going. He added so much excitement to the project. It was an incredible process.

3. What is your favorite line from your book?
There are text exchanges throughout the book. One of them is my favorite scene from the book because Shanae (the heroine) is trying to decide what kind of guy he is by giving him a hypothetical situation with two kinds of cookies. Mudflap's final line in that exchange is absolutely my favorite of the book.

Halftime Texting
Shanae: I have two cookies: one is a snickerdoodle, one is a chocolate chip.
Mudflap: Okay, that’s just mean when I haven’t eaten lunch yet.
Shanae: It’s a test. If I offer you one, which one do you take?
Mudflap: You’re testing me?
Shanae: Yes, now answer the question.
Mudflap: I’d take the snickerdoodle.
Shanae: Good answer, but why?
Mudflap: I have sisters. I know better than to get between a girl and her chocolate.
Mudflap: Did I pass?
Shanae: With flying colors.
Pause…
Mudflap: You weren’t just teasing about the cookies, right? I really am hungry.

4. What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?
Oh, wow...I don't watch much movies or TV (I read 400 books/year and write 4-6 books/year which doesn't leave much time). The book is about spies...Shanae is the heroine and I visualize her a lot like the character from Alias...was her name Sydney Bristol, maybe??

5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?
That's easy because there is already a tagline for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team which is the federal spy agency in the book. They hide their undercover work under the guise of an on-call 24/7 EMS contract company. In both aspects of their jobs, they are working to make American lives better and their tagline is:
On an ordinary day, they save lives.

On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

Blurb

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:

Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:

Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

THE SHADOW OF MUDFLAP Excerpt #2
“Hey, there. You look good enough to eat,” he growled. He glanced back at his Bronco. “Unfortunately, Derek is waiting for us in the car so I can’t take a nibble.”
A frisson of awareness skated down her spine. That tone in his voice…yummy.
“Thanks,” she said as she leaned up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. “You know how to make a girl feel good.” She lingered for a moment right below his ear to whisper, “You look pretty damn good yourself. But it’s hot and we don’t want the poor thing to suffer from heat exhaustion. I’m confused though.” She glanced at him as they walked out toward his truck. “Why would you bring your dog golfing? Are they even allowed on the course?”
He pulled her door open for her, but stalled her entrance into the Bronco. “Dog? I don’t have a dog.”
She sat in the seat, but scowled at him in confusion through the still open door. “Isn’t Derek your dog?”
Mudflap burst out laughing as he shut her car door. But it was the outraged, “What the hell did he tell you to make you think that?” coming from the backseat that told her she’d gotten something wrong.
She turned slowly to him. He was a young, clean cut, extremely good looking guy, who was not happy right now. He looked like a model from a young, hip magazine ad; well, he would if he wasn’t scowling.
Wincing, she offered her hand to him. “I guess you’re Derek, huh?”
Mudflap got into the car and continued to laugh at Derek’s expense. Derek shoved at his shoulder and muttered, “Asshole,” before offering her his hand. “Yes, I’m Derek. It’s nice to meet you Shanae.” His scowl quickly morphed into a flirty smile. “Already I can tell you’re too good for this guy. I say we dump him on the back nine and you and I can make a fun day of it without him.” He waggled his eyebrows at her.
Uh oh, this guy and that mischievous smile was trouble. She couldn’t help the giggle that erupted. “Sorry about the dog comment. I misunderstood.”
“Aw, sweetheart, no forgiveness is necessary. I know who to blame.” He turned to glare again at Mudflap. “Besides, gracing us with your beauty today more than makes up for it.”
Shanae couldn’t help the eye-roll. This guy was digging it deep.
“Hey, now. No horning in on my girl.” Mudflap frowned at Derek, but the corners of his mouth twitched with humor.
The two guys continued the back and forth banter all the way to the golf course, renting their equipment, and meeting up with their golf pro for the day, a very attractive redhead named Lisa. Shanae clued in on the fact that Derek had a bit of a crush on her simply by the fact that he continued to give both Shanae and Mudflap a hard time, but then got stiff when it came to interacting with her. It was sweet, if not for the fact that Lisa seemed completely oblivious to Derek.
Shanae would guess there was a pretty good age difference between the two. Derek was young, definitely early twenties, while Lisa was probably closer to thirty. Shanae doubted Lisa even saw Derek as a possibility for a date. She watched the two of them as Lisa corrected Derek’s form on the fourth hole. Lisa slid her hand down Derek’s arm to adjust his grip and Shanae could see all his muscles tighten in response.
Mudflap slid in to stand behind her. His hand wrapped around her waist felt entirely too right, so right she completely forgot about Lisa and Derek. She could feel the heat coming off his body and her pulse skittered.
But then Mudflap, who’d also been watching the other two, whispered in her ear, “I think his shaft is too big for that stroke.”
Of course, Shanae worked with guys all the time so her gaze immediately landed on Derek’s crotch where his erection pressed against his pants. “Don’t,” she hissed at Mudflap. “Don’t give him a hard time right now. Poor kid is infatuated and she isn’t even aware of him.”
Mudflap nuzzled her ear for a moment before whispering, “Ask her for some help on the next hole and make her aware. He’s a good guy. It would be nice if he could hook up with a woman who might actually appreciate him.”
And right there, Shanae’s heart melted a little bit more for this guy. Damn, sexy and sweet.
