Interview & GIVEAWAY: Geoducks Are for Lovers by Daisy Prescott

Geoducks are for Lovers by Daisy Prescott

What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

The initial spark happened when some friends were talking about going to a college reunion. Then shortly after I watched Reality Bites. The idea of what happened to those cynical Gen X friends now that they're in their forties sparked the idea for who my characters would be. I've been reading a lot of contemporary romances and while I enjoy New Adult, I thought it would be fun to write a love story where the characters are older, with baggage and complicated pasts but still figuring out their lives.

What was your favorite part of writing this book?

I loved writing the close connections between friends who have known each other for decades. My favorite character is Quinn. He is a composite of several people I've known in my life. I wish he really existed and were my bestie.

What is your favorite line from your book?

So difficult to choose!!! My favorite lines contain spoilers or are pure silliness that only work in context. This is from one of my favorite scenes.

“Ten dollars if you go outside and offer to wash his back,” Quinn stage whispers to Maggie as she drinks her coffee, obviously lost in a daydream.

What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

I'd say the book is a mix of Reality Bites and The Breakfast Club meets The Big Chill with the food and location as character of books like Under the Tuscan Sun.

If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?

Geoducks Are for Lovers
Some things are worth the wait

Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. After coming face to face with the one who got away, he decides he's waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of old friends, a few wishing rocks, the world’s largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack thrown into the mix, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

Excerpt

“We’ll see how the night goes.”

“Is that a challenge, Maggie May?” Gil leans forward and catches her eye, then puts his hand on her leg above her knee, and squeezes.

The heat of his hand warms her and her muscles clench.

“Maybe.”

Gil licks the corner of his mouth. “Good to know.” Leaning back, he keeps his hand on her thigh.

Mentally, Maggie fans herself. The fire in front of her isn’t the only one she’s playing with tonight.

Quinn and Ryan eventually make their way out to join the group on the beach, carrying the s’mores supplies along with metal skewers from the kitchen.

“I can’t believe I’m offering this after the meat feast, but who wants dessert?” Ryan gestures the platter of goodies.

“I’ll never turn down chocolate or Nutella.” Selah gets up to grab a skewer and marshmallow.

“I need to taste Maggie’s Nutella s’more,” Gil says, squeezing her leg. “Mind making me one?”

“If I can stand, sure.” She pushes off the sand, using Gil’s leg to prop herself up.

“Charred or not charred?” She waves a marshmallow in front of Gil.

“Charred, of course.” He grins.

“Heathen,” she teases and sticks the marshmallow directly into the flames. Pulling the flaming ball of goo out of the fire, she blows on it before handing the skewer to Gil. ‘Hold this, and no eating it.”

Carefully grabbing a graham crack, she smears on a dollop of Nutella, and then places the charred marshmallow on top before adding another cracker.

She licks a big dollop of Nutella off the side, getting some of the warm chocolate on the corner of her mouth.

“Here.” She hands him the sticky mess, noticing that Gil shifts his legs and squirms.

“You missed a spot.” He gestures to her lips before biting the s’more.

Maggie licks her lips, trying to get off the Nutella. She glances at Gil, who closes his eyes and moans.

“Good?”

“Mmmm…. Hhmmmm… mmmmm” is all that comes out of him. Still with his eyes closed he reaches up to swipe off the Nutella from chin with his thumb. It’s Maggie’s turn to quietly moan as she watches him lick his thumb.

“Food porn as foreplay?” Quinn asks as he sticks his own marshmallow into the flames next to Maggie.

“What?” She asks, completely unaware of where she is.

“You have it so bad.” Selah chimes in from behind her. “Move out of the way or toast another marshmallow.” She bumps Maggie with her hip.

“More,” Gil says, opening one eye as he pops the last of the s’more into his mouth.

“Best s’more ever?” Maggie asks, grabbing another marshmallow.

“Best ever.” Gil winks. “More.”

“Greedy.” She chars another marshmallow.

The rest of the gang is likewise toasting and moaning over their creations.

“Where was this when I used to smoke pot?” Quinn asks.

“I’m grateful Nutella wasn’t around in college. I’d be as big as a house,” Jo says, eating a perfectly toasted but not charred marshmallow.

Maggie hands Gil another s’more, which he snatches from her like a starving man.

“You okay there, big guy? Can I make one for myself now?”

Gil gives her a stink eye but nods his head, his mouth too full to respond verbally.

Maggie sits back down next to Gil with her own s’more. She takes a bite, closes her eyes and moans. She can’t help herself.

When she opens her eyes, she catches Gil licking the s’more right before biting it.

“What the hell?” She tries to save her s’more from his greedy mouth, but he is too quick.

“It was dripping and going to land on your shirt. I was trying to be a gentleman and protect your clothing.”

Maggie stares at him.

“Not buying it?”

“No.” She licks her lips where the melted marshmallow makes them sticky. She watches Gil staring at her lips.

“Can I help you with that?” He offers, his eyes flicking to her mouth, then back up to her eyes.

“I think I’ve got it.”

“I’m not sure about that.” He reaches out his index finger, swipes under her bottom lip, and shows her the chocolate.

Interview & GIVEAWAY: The Hunted Series by Jennifer Ryan

THE HUNTED SERIES

Saved by the Rancher, Lucky Like Us, The Right Bride

By: Jennifer Ryan

Fun Q&A with Jennifer Ryan on Saved by the Rancher.

1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

For me, it's always the opening scene that comes first. It is, after all, the catalyst for everything else.

In Saved by the Rancher, the spark came from the thought that we'd meet Jenna at her lowest point. How would she fight her way back, take control of her life once and for all, and find a man she could trust, who loved her and would never hurt her?

Do you believe in love at first sight? Jack certainly didn't. Not until Jenna came into his life, hurt and broken, he's compelled to help heal her, but her strength and generous heart draw him in even deeper. He'll do anything to mend her broken heart, show her love can build a life, not tear one down, and protect her at all costs against a man, who claims to love her, but only wants to possess her, or kill her if he can't have her.

2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?

Discovering the characters and their complexity. Writing David, Jenna's evil ex, was a lot of fun. He's just so cruel and calculating and a lot off balance.

3. What is your favorite line from your book?

"Obsessed, she had become a virus to him, infecting his system, destroying his rationality."

One line and you can extrapolate David's character and Jenna's reasons for living her life on the run and why Jack becomes so important to her -a lifeline of love and happiness if only David were out of the picture - for good.

4. What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

That's always a hard question for me. I'm not great at casting actors for my characters. I'd say the closest correlation is Sleeping with the Enemy - Julia Roberts.

Jenna's ex is a powerful businessman, accustomed to getting what he wants when he wants it. He's jealous and suspicious and throughout their short marriage, he tried to control her. Jenna escapes his brutality and runs. When Jack comes into her life, she desperately wants to believe in him and the love they share, but fears her ex will come after again - this time to kill her. Lucky for her, she's got Jack to stand beside her when she takes down her ex - and Jack will make sure he never hurts Jenna again.

5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?

This one is a bit easier. I use this line in the book description.

Saved by the Rancher: The hunted becomes the hunter.

Spotlight: His Broken Angel by Beth Ciotta

HIS BROKEN ANGEL

(The Glorious Victorious Darcys 1.5)
Bonus e-Novella (digital only)

BLURB:

From the author of Her Sky Cowboy comes a sexy new novella about rebellion, redemption, and the healing powers of love and tolerance amid budding global chaos.

Doc Blue has never had it easy. Born a Freak, the offspring of a Vic—a native Victorian—and a Mod—a time traveler from the future—he’s lived on the fringes of society, hiding his true identity and preternatural healing abilities from even his closest friends. His brief support of the Freak rebellion has only left him with even more problems, losing him both his job and one of his greatest allies, the Sky Cowboy, Tucker Gentry. So when Tuck’s kid sister, Lily, ends up blinded in an air skirmish on her way from America to England, Doc jumps at the opportunity to be the one to rescue her and use his powers to mend her wounds.

Curing Lily proves harder than anticipated, and Doc realizes that to restore her sight he will have to spill his biggest secret and embrace his Freak nature like never before. But, with Lily’s help, Doc may be able to reach the full potential of his abilities, heal Lily’s broken heart, and learn, finally, how to open his.

Includes a preview of the next Glorious Victorious Darcys novel, His Clockwork Canary.

EXCERPT:

“I’m sorry I got you in this fix,” Lily said, fiercely conscious of their intimate and highly inappropriate position. Arms and legs entangled. Her backside pressed against his groin.

“I’m here on account of my own actions, angel. I promise I’ll get us both out.” He shifted and squeezed her waist, pulling her even closer. “Jasper just ran off. Guess he’s heading for the Crusader. Don’t know what that dig looks like, but she must be flashy or big. P.J. said she’d attract attention.”

“What’s this dig look like?” Lily asked.

“Let’s put it this way. It’s called the Bullet.”

“Sleek and cylindrical.”

“With wings and a tail and some sort of rocket booster. P.J.’s firing up now.”

Lily heard the rumble clean through the shield. The cramped dirigible vibrated and shimmied and Lily braced for takeoff. “Are you scared, King?”

“You forget I’ve been riding with your brother for the past few years. If we weren’t chasing and apprehending outlaws, we were clashing with sky pirates and ALE. This is nothing. Although P.J’s flying ain’t for the fainthearted.”

“I’m not fainthearted.” Lily licked her lips. “Not usually.”

“I believe you, but flying blind is discombobulating. Focus on my voice,” he said close to her ear as the vessel lurched forward. “I’ll talk you through it.”

For a minute she was breathless, speechless. Her mind and body reeled with the forceful launch and the sudden unexpected speed as they shot through the air. Just as he’d promised, Doc described everything. The three ships that constituted skytown breaking apart and heading in separate directions , several other smaller digs shooting off every which way . . .

“Ah, the Crusader.”

“Flashy and big?” she asked, holding tight to Doc’s hands.

“Beauty of a zeppelin wrapped in an intricate iron grill. Topside propeller and rear rocket thrusters. Gondola’s loaded with cannons and the zepp’s fitted to carry small fighter digs like this one.”

“How . . . how can you be sure it’s the Crusader?” Lily asked as the Bullet lurched right.

“The big S welded into the intricate grill work.” Doc sighed. “Caped Crusader. Man of Steel. Superman. A twentieth-century superhero. Pa used to liken Jasper to the fictional icon. Thing is Superman used his powers for the greater good.”

“For Jasper,” Lily said as she struggled with a dizzy spell, “emancipating Freaks is the greater good.”

“You’re a good soul, Lily Gentry.”

Doc kissed the back of her head and the dizziness intensified. Only it wasn’t from the topsy-turvy ride. Cannon fire exploded in the distance and Lily burst with a fierce need to live in the moment. This moment. “I’ve never been kissed.”

“What?”

“If this ends badly, I want something good to remember when I meet my maker.”

“Don’t talk nonsense, angel. P.J.’ll get us out of here. If nothing else, her pride demands it.”

Ignoring the ache in her ribs and the pain in her leg, Lily swiveled round best she could. “Kiss me proper-like, King.”

“Lily.”

She could feel the warmth of his breath. His mouth, so close. His body tensed as she leaned in, but she didn’t pull back. She waited . . . and when the Bullet shook with the blast of return fire, she took what she wanted. A kiss. Though her mouth glanced off Doc’s, she tasted a hint of peppermint and slice of heaven. Bliss.

He groaned then, cradled her face, and pressed his lips to hers—firm and true. He kissed her proper-like. The kind of kiss she’d read about in dime novels. The kind she’d seen stolen between lovers in the park. Heat radiated through her body, her skin tingled, and her blood burned. He teased the seam of her mouth with his tongue, and Lily’s lungs near about burst through her ribs.

Inspired by their precarious circumstance and her uncertain future, she parted her lips and welcomed Doc’s tongue. The awfulness of the world faded away as the compassionate healer gifted her with sizzling passion.

The Bullet bucked then arced, and Lily’s heart followed.

Ancient and forgotten, until now.

Thanks for stopping by Elizabeth. I love the tagline.  Illuminati sounds fun and interesting. More info on Illuminati: The Book of Life below.

Illuminati Blurb:
Ljluka Vargas, immortal prince and the cool-headed enforcer for the Vargas Dynasty, must go up against his most intriguing enemy, the mysterious Nalini. She intends to beat him to the secret archaeological site of The Book of Life which contains the genetic secrets of their ancient ancestors.

In order to escape the cruel domination of her family and gain freedom for her mother, Nalini assumes the role of assassin. In her rival, the sleek and deadly Luc, she finds a different kind of danger. She’s supposed to eliminate him, but that would foil destiny’s plan for them to be together.

It’s a race from power-hungry D.C. cabinet rooms through the secret realms of the Vatican, from cloud forests and desert sands to the caverns of the Underworld as mankind hangs in the balance. For whoever possesses the Book of Life has the potential to rule the world, offering or denying immortality to the human race.

About the Author:

Now that her children have flown from the nest, Elizabeth lives with her two new babies (AKA Maltese) and husband, Bobby, at the foot of the beautiful Catalina Mountain Range in Oro Valley, AZ.

She loves to hike the mountain trails, ride her bike on the miles of walk/bike paths, sit on her patio sipping coffee and reading or brainstorming plots and enjoying the grandeur of her breathtaking mountain views.

Elizabeth calls herself a pantser on steroids. The first book of her Illuminati series flowed like a psychic muse channeled it from her fingertips to the keyboard. She wrote 120,000 words in 45 days. "After the first couple of chapters, the characters took over. They knew what they wanted and what they were willing to do to get it."

Her love of mythology and ancient literature and history were the backbone for her series, and the Sigma Force series by James Rollins inspired the fast-paced adventures (He recently told her at a literacy fundraiser that he found that flattering, as no one had ever told him he was inspiring before!). The result was an action packed URBAN FANTASY novel series, with its basis in truth, superstitions, mythology and conspiracy theories.

A friend compared Elizabeth's series to what it would be like if Ford and Jolie stepped through the Stargate using the Da Vinci code as a compass, tried to kill each other, and ended up colliding with a love as seemingly hopeless as Romeo and Juliet. Elizabeth claims she pictured a blond "The Rock" as the hero when she was writing, but that Jolie, with lavender eyes, would fit her heroine just fine. It was difficult for her to claim a genre (pigeon hole) for this work. There is a love relationship, but it's all about the family relationships, dysfunctional and otherwise, and the timeless struggle for power. There are very strong female leads in this story, and the men are macho enough to hold their own.

In the above picture, Elizabeth was in New Orleans on a tram with author friends Nancy Gideon and Laurie C. Kuna, doing research for book II in the series. Travel, exploring and research have always been her idea of a good time!
