Fun Q&A with Jennifer Ryan on Saved by the Rancher.
1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?
For me, it's always the opening scene that comes first. It is, after all, the catalyst for everything else.
In Saved by the Rancher, the spark came from the thought that we'd meet Jenna at her lowest point. How would she fight her way back, take control of her life once and for all, and find a man she could trust, who loved her and would never hurt her?
Do you believe in love at first sight? Jack certainly didn't. Not until Jenna came into his life, hurt and broken, he's compelled to help heal her, but her strength and generous heart draw him in even deeper. He'll do anything to mend her broken heart, show her love can build a life, not tear one down, and protect her at all costs against a man, who claims to love her, but only wants to possess her, or kill her if he can't have her.
2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?
Discovering the characters and their complexity. Writing David, Jenna's evil ex, was a lot of fun. He's just so cruel and calculating and a lot off balance.
3. What is your favorite line from your book?
"Obsessed, she had become a virus to him, infecting his system, destroying his rationality."
One line and you can extrapolate David's character and Jenna's reasons for living her life on the run and why Jack becomes so important to her -a lifeline of love and happiness if only David were out of the picture - for good.
4. What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?
That's always a hard question for me. I'm not great at casting actors for my characters. I'd say the closest correlation is Sleeping with the Enemy - Julia Roberts.
Jenna's ex is a powerful businessman, accustomed to getting what he wants when he wants it. He's jealous and suspicious and throughout their short marriage, he tried to control her. Jenna escapes his brutality and runs. When Jack comes into her life, she desperately wants to believe in him and the love they share, but fears her ex will come after again - this time to kill her. Lucky for her, she's got Jack to stand beside her when she takes down her ex - and Jack will make sure he never hurts Jenna again.
5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?
This one is a bit easier. I use this line in the book description.
Saved by the Rancher: The hunted becomes the hunter.
