Interview – Rachelle Ayala, author of Knowing Vera
1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your
book?
The Golden Gate Bridge is a symbol of hope and dreams, the
gateway for many Asians immigrating to the United States. It is also the site
of many suicides. There is something special about exiting the world at such a
scenic and photogenic location. Cruel as it sounds, my first thought was having
seven-year-old Vera witness her father’s suicide while hugging her teddy bear.
2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?
Zach, Zach, and more Zach! He’s everything a girl could want
from his panty-melting grin to his swimmer’s physique and roguish Aussie
accent. More than that, he is every kind of wonderful combined in a
hunkalicious sweetheart who puts other people first. He lost his leg in a
rescue attempt, but instead of turning bitter or giving up on life, he decided
to make his life more meaningful by caring for other people. He doesn’t look
for sympathy or excuses, but lives his life to the fullest. He’s honest with
his feelings and loves Vera even when she wasn’t very lovable. But he has
self-respect and walks away when Vera shoves him one time too many. He never
grovels, he’s not a doormat, and he doesn’t let people push him around. But
he’s romantic. He remembers the little things Vera asked for and surprises her
by giving her much more than his boomerang. Oh, and did I mention how talented
he is??? Swwooonnn.
3. What is your favorite line from your book?
“As true and as blue as my eyes.” Zach grins that
half-cocked panty-vaporizing smile. “When an Aussie gives you his boomerang,
it’s forever. No secret.”
4. What movie or television show would you say is most like
your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?
This is a really hard question. What other movie or tv show
combines fight scenes on the Golden Gate Bridge with love scenes on a deserted
island, cockatoos, electro dancing, an amputee hero, a crazy stalker who works
at a retirement community and a murderer who always wears shades?
It would probably be a Filipino teleserye. I don’t know any
exact title, but they usually have family drama, children who are not the
offspring of their parents, unsolved murders, kidnappings, long lost lovers,
revenge across generations, heart-rending childhood, several men vying for the
same woman, crazy brothers and uncles, someone getting framed, near drownings
and fights in high places, hospital scenes and repressed memories. I think the
only thing I’m missing here is sister drama, since Vera has no sisters. Oh, and
the police never get there in time and frequently arrest the wrong person.
5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design
the movie poster, what would the tagline say?
Knowing Vera: What she knows could blow her chance for love.
Vera
Custodio has never fallen in love, though she has strong feelings for her
friend and sometimes lover, Zach Spencer. Long-forgotten memories resurface
when Vera discovers Zach’s mother was the woman her father supposedly murdered
many years ago.
After
losing his leg, former triathlete Zach Spencer reevaluates his life—and
realizes he’s falling in love with Vera. When she ends their relationship, Zach
is determined to prove his love and follows her to Australia in search of the
killer.
Caught
between a web of family secrets and a deranged adversary, Vera and Zach must
depend on each other for survival. Love blossoms, but the truth explodes
everything Vera knows about herself. Will she close her heart forever or risk
it all for a shot at happily-ever-after?
Knowing Vera is a suspenseful, cross-cultural
romance mixing an unsolved murder, action and adventure, and hot, steamy love
scenes.
